This summer I had the fortunate experience to cycle across the country with an amazing group of individuals to support affordable housing. Many of you supported my trip one way or another and for that I am very grateful. The experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity I will always treasure.
Bike and Build organizes 8 cross country and 2 regional trips a year. The trips are well organized and take countless safety precautions to try to ensure the safety of all riders. Unfortunately one of the biggest safety concerns for a rider is out of there control, that concern has to do with risking and distracted drivers.
Today Bike and Build's Maine to Santa Barbara route lost Patrick Wanninkhof. He was struck by a driver who confessed to being distracted by her cell phone and didn't see Patrick or his fellow rider, Bridget Anderson. Bridget was airlifted and is currently in critical condition.
The accident today is a tragedy and could've easily been avoided. My thoughts go out to the members of ME2SB, Bridget, and Patrick's families. I ask you to also take time to remember there is nothing on your phone that can't wait. Please be a careful, cautious, and aware drive. When you see a cyclist also know they are trying their best to share the road and if you need to pass them wait for the right time before leaving sufficient space between them and your car.
